Internationalize Your English

Last week I wrote about how international businesses need to follow the use of translation software.

I am a very strong advocate of using free translation tools for

Online international market research, followed up by phone research.

International business or competitive intelligence, combined by human translations when appropriate

So naturally I like to follow how other professionals also use translation software to get a competitive advantage in international business. I wrote about how:

Translators use translation software to speed up their work.

Content writers adapt their writing for translation software.

Now, there is one other aspect to international content you should also be aware of.

International English Content

Many international businesses write content in English for international audiences. These international audiences include a very large percentage of non-native English speakers.

When you write for such a large international audience in English, and you also analyze the feedback from your audience, your writing naturally evolves into a unique style.

This is what I call International English.

You adapt your writing to avoid common miscommunication problems.

You also adapt your writing to use words your audience easily understands.

When you get feedback from your audience, you quickly understand where there is misleading content.

Difficult passages to understand.

Words your readers stumble on or misinterpret

Things, concepts, processes, instructions or ideas you do not explain well enough

Further clarification your readers need

The process of adapting your writing happens very naturally over time. Your writing acquires cross-cultural communication skills.

Cross-Cultural Communication

In cross-cultural communication there are two key ingredients:

Clarity

Consistency

Strong cultural references are also avoided.

Now what does this leave you with?

International English & Translation-Friendly Content

This International English content is also very similar to writing English to be translation-friendly for future software translations. Both methods of writing provide content that is easier to translate using translation tools.

An International English content will get you better results with software translations.

There is also one other point…

International English For Localization

The process of website localization also includes a phase of reviewing content to make it translation-friendly. This is an important preparation if you want to make it easier for different translations.

Online businesses leverage templates for successful website localizations. But you need to start off with a good base.

Templates provide easy international expansion tools. They save businesses time and money.

International English content makes this template process easy.

Start International Business With International English

International English content is the best place to start for either human translations or software translations.

International English content also gets your message across different cultures more effectively.

If you are developing your business into international markets, give International English content your full consideration.

It can:

Save you money in the short term – avoiding misunderstanding for both clients and translators.

Provide a much stronger marketing advantage in the long term – the current trend is towards implementing more and more languages. International English content makes this easier

And one you should be aware of if your business has foreign online prospects.

The answer is not always easy to find.

If you are a small business targeting international clients actively, you should take this into account when analyzing your web analytics and testing for better conversion.

Different countries have search engines that look and feel different to the user. This is due to cultural differences.

In some countries relying on queries for leads just will not work. The reason can be a mixture of different buying habits, language structures or simply different cultural online preferences.

Sometimes paid and sponsored links will get you traffic where search engine queries fail.

How can you find out what the best internet marketing practices are in your target country? Asking the appropriate professionals in the foreign country is the best route.

These may be internet marketers or successful businesses in your field. If you are doing foreign market research and networking within your target country, remember to add this question to your list of questions.

Internet marketing can keep your international business development costs down and help you get international clients faster…if you actually do some good internet marketing.

Or maybe your company has a few good clients in a country and you want to develop that market further.

You are now ready to create a localized website. A website for a foreign country.

The very first thing you should do is start an analysis of your foreign prospect. One part of this foreign prospect analysis is identifying his online navigation habits.

Different Navigation Habits

He will probably use his search engine differently.

He will not get to your website the same way as your domestic internet visitors.

He may not arrive on your website at the same spot as your domestic visitors.

When he is on your website he will not have the same reactions to your website.

There are three main reasons for this:

Different languages have different structure. The mechanics of the language are different. Some things just cannot be processed with the same logic in a different language. Sometimes they could more or less be processed the same way, but the foreign language has a better way for doing it, so people think of approaching things differently.

Different buying cycle. Different cultures are used to doing business differently. This comes out in how they go about buying things.

Differently cultures have different personality traits. We’ve all heard of the different clichés for different cultures. These stem from the fact that different cultures do things differently.

Analyzing your foreign prospects will be an ongoing process. Here is something you can do to get started:

Visit a website in your foreign market. Identify your foreign competitors and have a look at their website. Or try to find a website on a topic you know written by people in the foreign country. This will give you something to compare with.

Even if you do not understand the language, you can still get some valuable information. Spend a few minutes looking at this website and ask yourself questions like these:

Look at how this website is different from what you are used to.

How does it make you feel?

Click through some of the links.

Come back to the home page.

Does the link through strategy seem logical to you?

Does it appear different?

Can you name a feeling the website gives you?

Is it more vibrant than you are used to?

Does it have a busy screen?

Is there anything that surprises you?

Does it make you laugh?

Why?

Where are the differences?

What questions come to mind when you see this difference?

Why do you think this website is different?

Can you give the website a personality?

What do you like about the personality?

What is interesting about the personality?

Does the personality tell you anything else?

Would you want to come back to this website?

Why, or why not?

Of course you will not be able to answer these questions. This is just a simple exercise to try to begin understanding your foreign prospect on his territory.

Repeat this exercise as you become even more familiar with your foreign prospect. You will begin to understand him better. It is amazing what you can learn simply by spending some time looking at what your foreign prospects are used to.

Multicultural communication is not a science. Good cross cultural communication comes from developing your own mindset.

To make your localized website a success it will have to communicate with your foreign market on their level. Your company will have to adapt its mindset to mirror the foreign markets communication and business style.

You can also read up on how different cultures communicate and use their websites. You will find a list of books in the Resource section of www.cindyking.biz.

International Internet Succes From an Isolated Brick and Mortar French Location

The story is cute and spoke of the difficulties he faced with his business.

This unschooled 65-year old clock repairman from a very small city in the French countryside is looking forward to his retirement. But he is finding it difficult to get someone to replace him. He did not say that getting business to his little shop was hard. He didn’t mention difficulties speaking with his clients, even though he only speaks French. He found it difficult to find someone who was willing to move to the small city to fix clocks that are shipped in from all over the world. His international customer base is vital, as it is for any business that wants to expand.

Localization is the process of making an easy to read website that is suitable to a foreign market. This is the task of taking an existing website and molding it to be acceptable to an audience far away. This is much more than translation. Translating a website is changing the words to be read in a different language. The art of localizing your message englobes all of the subtle changes necessary to make your message communicate fully to the reader.

Internet gives any businesses the ability to reach an international audience. I am sitting in France as I type this. Small businesses should know the importance of having revenues in different economic environments. They should also by now be recognizing that an important step in those international sales is directly related to the localization of their website.
If this clock repairman from an isolated French town with a population of under 20 thousand can create an international business, you can too.

These stories are inspiring. And when they are stories in countries I’m not familiar with they often completely take me off guard.

In his book “Redefining Global Strategy”, Copyright 2007, from Harvard Business School Publishing Corporation, Pankaj Ghemawat, gives a few examples of how everyday products were changed to adapt to local market demands in India:

Detergent bars for people to wash their clothes by hand.

Toothpaste made to be used with fingers instead of toothbrushes

A bar of soap with one side coated in plastic so it would take longer to wear down

A special shampoo and hair oil product

Hearing about such stories gives us all valuable insights into the cultural differences in our foreign markets. It makes us realize that other cultures have basic needs and desires different to our own. Other people live very differently than we do.

How can we use the inspiration from these stories in our own business?

Continue Localizing Your Online Businesses

Businesses targeting international markets mainly through online sales and marketing activities should be inspired to persevere with market research.

Opening your online international development by localizing your websites can lead to increased interaction with foreign markets. Ongoing research and market feedback will lead to adjustments to adapt your products to foreign markets.

Pankaj Ghemawat explains that large multinationals have the choice of:

Coming into a country and simply skimming off the narrow top level of the market, or

Expanding their products through innovation to meet local cultural needs.

Not all companies developing overseas will have the luxury of making this choice.

Localization Is A Tool To Understand Your Foreign Markets

An intimate understanding of each of your foreign markets will be a major factor in innovating your products to different cultures.

By stimulating feedback from your foreign markets, even if it is only online, you will acquire valuable foreign market knowledge. Combine this knowledge with the right mindset. Try to look at your products through your foreign prospects eyes, and experience your products as he would experience them.

The question is will you simply skim off your market or will you be inspired to innovate your products to local needs and desires.

Will all of the research and analyzing your products “results” in foreign markets keep you from being truly inspired and seeing the opportunities for new product innovation?

If you follow these tips your web site will be friendlier for all of your international visitors.

Internet User demographics are changing. Most North American companies rely on being referenced by Google. Let’s take a closer look below at how well Google searches fare in two of the world’s largest markets.Remember if Google is not penetrating well into a foreign market, then your website will not be found in that market. In China, Google has a 27% market share; but the local language search engine Baidu has a full 55%.Similarly, in Russia, Google is in a distant third place, with Yandex the leader and another Russian player – Rambler – holding second.

Google holds only a 17% market share in Russia – behind the two Russian Language sites that control nearly 75% of that market. In addition to the 140 million Russians, there are an additional 145 million people that speak Russian worldwide.

More than 50% of growth in internet users from 2007-2010 is likely to come from China, Russia and India which are behind western Europe and North America – please note that these countries have more than 40% of the worlds population. It is probably time to find out how to get your site listed on these search engines.

Turning Point:

Chinese and Russian Population & Internet Numbers:

215 million Americans have internet access at present. There are 162 million internet users in China and 60 million more from India. A number that equals all of the users in the United States as in China and India combined – BUT there are more than 2 billion other Chinese and Indians that are not yet on the internet.

China is the world’s most populated country, nearly 1.4 Billion people. Russia has the largest population in Europe, larger than Germany and France combined. Russia and China each have one of the world’s fastest growing economies.

Internet penetration in Russia currently stands at about 20% – half the European average and less than a third of the 69.9% in the United States. In China, penetration is just 10.9% (so there are a BILLION future clients that are not on the internet yet).

When China gets to the worldwide average for internet penetration of 20% they will have passed the number of American internet users and when they hit the European average they will have more uses than Europe and North America combined.

The penetration levels in Western Europe and North America appear to have stabilized and look unlikely to grow significantly in the future. As an example, Internet penetration is 55% and 65% of the French and German populations.

The majority of new world-wide internet users will come from China and India, since their present internet penetration is only 12.5% and 5% respectively. The bulk of new European users will be from Russia, the Ukraine and Turkey. It is estimated that in less then 2 years China will pass the United States as the biggest internet community online.

Is Google up to the Challenge?

Time for an interesting question; have Google and Microsoft reached their Search Engine plateau about to begin the decline in worldwide search engine importance? I exclude Yahoo! since word on the street has been that Microsoft will acquire them and Yahoo! has been on a decline for the last several years.

Most of the estimations that I have read place Google at more than 70% of the present market share. What will be their global market share in five years time? Even if they grow their market share in Russia and China their overall world share may fall because of the increase in non-Latin Alphabet searches.

Getting Ranked on Baidu Yandex and Rambler

Yandex does not accept site submissions from sites hosted outside Russia or sites not in Russian. This does not mean, however, that domain names have to be from the former Soviet Union (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan) but hosted with an IP address from a Russian speaking country OR with pages in Russian.

By chance, Yandex offers free hosting services, so starting a Russian language site is not as hard as it may seem. Sites are indexed quicker if it is significantly linked to by sites hosted in Russia and Russian language sites, similar to the Google algorithm that gives greater value to a link to your site if the linker is in your field.

I don’t read Chinese or Russian but have been able to find how to upload a URL on these sites. Unlike Google, Baidu has merged all of their search results together – organic and paid.

Probably the best way to be a top 10 player in the Baidu SERP’s is to pay. Capitalism is alive and well in China, and with a billion future clients it may be worth your while. To be honest, the best way to be on the Google or Yahoo Front page is also by advertising.

To improve user experience, Baidu has introduced “phonetic” or “pin-yin” search which allows users to type in Chinese keywords using English alphabets. They do advertise Pay for Performance (P4P) and they tailor advertising solutions. To rank well organically, you must first realize that the Chinese search audience is very Chinese oriented. Your landing page must be fully in Chinese and presented in the Chinese style. Similar issues arise in other countries; a Japanese site made by a Texan will not be accepted. So, plan on hiring a Chinese team to include a copywriter – not a translator – and a graphic artist. These folks should be born and raised in mainland China, not American of Chinese origins.

The Baidu site states that the Simplified Chinese language is their language of choice so do not be concerned (yet) about the multiple languages available Like all search engines, Baidu does not guarantee your site will be crawled. Like all search engines, once listed on Baidu, you can improve your position by providing high quality content that you regularly keep up to date and your site must have inbound links from Chinese sites.

As an end note; the literal meaning of Baidu is “hundreds of times” and represents persistent search for the ideal. Yandex is explained as “Yet Another iNDEXer”.

Submitting your Site to Foreign Search Engines

Most website will not be listed in the foreign language search engines unless by chance. Using this very short tutorial you will be able to submit your website to several foreign language search engines. If you have a country that you would like included in this tutorial, leave a comment requesting your country, language or search engine of preference and it will be included.

Submitting your Site to Baidu

Click this link to submit your site to Baidu, fill in the http line and the code – in the example below 6HXW.

Hit the enter button (OK, the button next to the captcha code that probably means enter) and you are done.

Submitting your Site to Yandex

Submitting in the Russian sites requires at least one page in Russian. I created a new blog post that is a translation of the Services Page for Cindy King on her site.

How do you do this? Go to the Google, English to Russian Translation page, paste in your text and hit enter.

Once you create a page in Russian you submit that page to the Yandex Webmaster Tool to submit your Russian page and enter the captcha code. Use the Google Russian to English translation page to read any message that comes up.

You may experience several different error messages, but don’t give up. It took me a couple of trys, but it was actually easy (and you have my translations to begin with!).

Submitting your Site to Rambler

Rambler does take a bit more effort, but I was able to do this using the online translation tools from Google in less than 10 minutes. You will be able to do it in about two minutes. Go to the Rambler Регистрация (registration) page, again with your link to your Russian page.

This is a partial snapshot of the registration page. I actually had two different pages while submitting, but the sequence was the same on both pages.
-

Each line has been translated by Google, enter the appropriate data, again linking to your page in Russian. Keep in mind that no translation tool is perfect, but my translation will get you through the process.

Название сайта is your site name. Choose an appropriate name and translate it into Russian.

URL головной страницы is your site URL. (an example of translation tools not working, I translated this text from Russian to English and Google told me “URL pages headache”. Pretty sure that is not 100% correct.)

Описание translates to description. I included 2 paragraphs, again translated by Google.

Контактное лицо is your contact person, probably your name, or your site administrator.

E-mail (or E-mail Контактное лицо) is the email address of the person listed as your site contact.

Finally, there are 2 buttons at the bottom of the form, I chose the button on the left, and it worked. I have to assume this means submit.

Finally…

After you hit that button on the left you should get to a page that shows:
Ваша страница принята к регистрации и будет рассмотрена в ближайшее время. which means that “your page is accepted for registration and will be reviewed shortly”. Isn’t Russian an easy language to work with?
In most countries Google, Yahoo and MSN are also the leading search directories. But some countries have other local search directories you should know about if you are targeting those countries. This is where you will learn how to get your website registered with other foreign search engines. Only this aspect is covered here.

Submitting your Site to Yandex

Submitting in the Russian sites requires at least one page in Russian. I created a new blog post that is a translation of the Services Page of this site. How do you do this? Go to the Google, English to Russian Translation page, paste in your text and hit enter. Once you create a page in Russian you submit that page to the Yandex Webmaster Tool and enter the captcha code. Use the Google Russian to English translation page to read a message. You may experience several error messages, but don’t give up.

Submitting your Site to Rambler

Rambler does take a bit more effort, but I was able to do this using the online translation tools from Google in less than 10 minutes. You will be able to do it in two minutes. This is a partial snapshot of the Rambler Регистрация (registration) page.

Finally… After you hit that button on the left you should get to a page that shows Ваша страница принята к регистрации и будет рассмотрена в ближайшее время. which means that “your page is accepted for registration and will be reviewed shortly”. Isn’t Russian an easy language to work with?

As a small business owner would you like to develop your international business? Would you like to reach an international audience as wide as possible? Even if you already have a global website, you will reach more people simply by translating your website into more languages. How do you select which languages to use?

Do a little internet surfing and you will see that some companies have websites in over 10 languages. Businesses are offering over 20 languages are more common than in the past and the increase in choices of language is rising each year.

Deciding how many languages and which languages to use for your website takes time. How do you decide which languages to use when translation costs can be expensive and cultural marketing mistakes are notorious?

The choice of languages, and website translations, can take time. But this is not the first step. The first step important for your international business development is preparation for future multiple multilingual websites.

By simply being aware of the steps involved in website globalization you will avoid common pitfalls. It will save you time and money in the long run if you prepare for their future implementation right from the start when creating your local website. Preparing for progressive growth today can prove a key element in reaching all of your international markets tomorrow.

Sufficient preparation will give you the key market information you need to make your websites truly global.

Translation is not the only key element to a fully customized global website. There are four main areas for success global websites.

Language

The first is obviously the language. To reach 80% of today’s internet users you need to communicate in at least 10 languages. The long time standard choice of languages, French, Italian, German and Spanish, will no longer suffice. In addition to the larger countries with high internet user demographics, the smaller developing countries can also represent a great market to target.

Companies can surprise themselves by choosing languages they did not think of just a short time ago. Many of the companies now offering over 20 languages did not imagine they would offer so many languages so quickly. Plan for expansion.

For best results, plan on extending the choice of languages your website is available in. The expansion of internet users is still underway. Internet demographics are changing.

The trend is confirmed. More and more businesses are increasing the number of languages available on their website. Part of the reason is due to business globalization. Also, internet users all over the world are also expecting to find more information in their own languages. This is why companies are expanding their choice of languages so dramatically.

Localization

The localization of your website is also a critical factor in bringing your online business global. What is localization? Localization involves the complete translation of your website, and registration in all of the appropriate local directories.

Not all websites are located in the same country. There is not one search engine that references every single website in the world in all languages. Google is the number one ranked search engine. Google is not the number one ranking search engine in every language in every country. There are many search engine options available that are specific to one language.

A user in a foreign country will probably use his local search engine, in his own language, when looking up information on the web. You can create a local website. Or you can register your website in the appropriate local directories in the local language. If you cannot be found, your translation costs are worthless.

Companies often adopt a progressive approach to localization. In part due to the time it takes to translate the website, the investment in translation, and also to refine the local marketing strategies.

In this case, the company will localize the website before all of the content is translated into the local language. Local users respond well to this if they have something in their local language and they are clearly shown where to go to find further information – see Navigation Techniques. The key is to keep the links open to the more detailed information during the transition and to label them clearly.

For your localized website to communicate well you need a certain depth of content. As translation costs are expensive and time consuming, companies often prefer to take this transition slowly, to adopt their website as closely as their website templates allow them to the local markets.

This is why initial localized websites often feel little more than a brochure and do not create a good user experience. If a little thought is given to this transition process, the website can be transparent about what has been translated or not. This gives the user control over his experience with your website and does not stop communication.

The localization of your website also involves tailoring various website elements to the local culture. Icons, photos, local holidays, date and time formats and search engine promotions. Only after all of these elements have been researched and modified will the international user feel “at home”.

Navigation Techniques

Another key element to a successful global online business is the use of appropriate navigation techniques. This will help users to find their local language website quickly and easily. Some .com websites have more than half of their traffic from internet users abroad. These international users should be directed as easily as possible to their local websites. There is no perfect navigation strategy. The key is to find the best solution for your business and your users.

There are a few techniques you can choose from to direct traffic to your local website. However the techniques are evolving as the number of languages is increasing. With this increase in languages it is easy to understand the decline of the pull down language menu. There are just too many languages being offered now. Also, the use of flags is not as popular as in the past.

Today, the techniques generally considered include using a country domain name. Some companies, such as Google, have done very well with geolocation and language recognition. And the rising trend is to use a splash global gateway or a permanent global gateway.

As you choose which techniques are best suited for your company, remember two rules of international business etiquette:
1. Indicate the foreign language in the foreign language and script.
2. Remain neutral. Do not show favoritism for a particular country.

The best thing is to check out what others are doing in industries similar to yours and to keep checking to see any new trends. With the increase in countries being targeted, even more navigation techniques are sure to be developed.

Company Branding

The last key element for a successful global website is consistency across cultures. One of the best tools for ensuring consistency is using web templates. Templates ensure the same company branding across cultures.

But the reason why templates are such an important element to a successful global business is the savings in time and money. Templates make it easier to manage websites in multiple languages. You will naturally choose templates that are easy to modify into different languages and templates that are compatible in different countries. Your technical teams will find it easier and quicker to work with templates. They eliminate technical issues such as resizing. Your sales and marketing teams will also appreciate them. Templates make international promotions a lot easier; your marketing reactivity will be quicker.

Templates have a huge impact on the cost of translation and timeframe for implementation. Translations of web content can take longer than foreseen.

As stated earlier, when companies first set up a localized website they often only translate the basic outline of their website into the local language. And then they often decide to look for a better adaptation of their web content for local markets. Templates can provide companies the framework needed.

Using company wide web templates does not restrict local websites. Web templates are designed with multiple translations and multiple local websites. This will actually help the local websites by having less design elements to translate.

Consistency in the language used is also very important and often over looked. This is a good tool to have in place even if your website is in one language, especially if your website has a lot of content or gives specialized details.

When multiple translations are made from one document consistency in language is critical for accuracy. Inconsistent language can easily lead to errors in translation giving users the wrong information.

The best tool to use for language consistency is a company glossary. Establishing a company glossary before printing any written content is a good move.

Using a consistent vocabulary on the main website will also make it easier for foreign users to understand your message. It will also help the translators in their job.

Prepare For International Growth

What can you do to prepare your company for international expansion? Even if you are a small business with little or no current international clients, take the time to plan for the development of a globalized website. Include this step as part of your international business strategy.

A little thought while setting up your main website will help you make the transition into multiple language websites a lot smoother. A little preparation beforehand will save you time and money when you actually need the translations. You will be able to respond quickly and appropriately as your international business grows.

Don’t limit your company’s international potential by not seeing beyond your needs today. Start preparing for the international expansion your global internet company promises you tomorrow.
