An International View Of Valentines Day 2009

Many cultures have a day when they celebrate Love. Christians celebrate Valentines Day, some Asian countries have a special day for love – and the Singaporeans, Chinese and Koreans spend the most money on Valentines Day gifts. In Korea, the 14th day of every month is designated for some display of love and affection and the giving of a gift in celebration of love. In Iranian culture, Sepandarmazgan the 29th Bahman (17 February) is the day for love and earth.

Here are some posts about Valentines Day in different places around the world.

Welcome to the 14 February 2009 edition of the International Marketing Review, and Happy Valentines Day.

Serenella Leoni presents The Italian origin of Valentine’s Day posted at Examiner saying “It is believed that Valentine’s Day can be traced back to Roman times during the reign of Emperor Claudius II in the 3rd century. Believing that single men would be more dedicated to their lives as soldiers, Claudius banned marriages for young men. Valentine (a Roman priest) found this law unjust (and un-Christian). The priest continued to marry couples in secret despite the Emperor’s decree. Valentine was ultimately discovered and Claudius condemned him to death.”

Duncan presents Wellington Zoo Adults Only on Valentines Day posted at The Inspiration Room Daily saying “Wellington Zoo in New Zealand is holding an adults only session between 5.30 pm and 8 pm on Valentine’s Day. Now is that adult animals or adult humans we’re talking about? ”

The Pink Chaddi Campaign presents What is the Pink Chaddi Campaign? posted at Consortium of Pubgoing, Loose and Forward Women saying “The Pink Chaddi Campaign kicked off on 5 February 2009 to oppose the Sri Ram Sena. The campaign is growing exponentially (31,888 members at this point in the life of our Consortium of Pub-going, Loose and Forward Women) and that is not surprising. Most women in this country have enough curbs on their lives without a whole new franchise cashing in with their bully-boy tactics. Of course, a lot of men have joined the group as well.”

Also, The Facebook group, called “A Consortium of Pub-going, Loose and Forward Women,” was formed to combat plans by the conservative Hindu activists, known as Sri Ram Sena (”the Army of Lord Ram”).

Psychiereport presents Happy Non-Valentines From the Cleric to your Heart? posted at The Women of Islam saying “Senior Muslim clerics have urged Sudanese youngsters to boycott Valentine’s Day, saying it is a Western institution that could lead couples astray.
Members of the Sudan Ulema Authority, an influential body of religious leaders, called on young men and women to ignore the event on February 14 and resist the temptation to mark it by taking romantic strolls in parks.”

Nicolae Sfetcu @nicolae presents Valentine’s Day similar days in Asia and Middle East posted at Nicolae Sfetcu saying “Thanks to a concentrated marketing effort, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in some Asian countries with Singaporeans, Chinese and South Koreans spending the most money on Valentine’s gifts.
In Japan, in 1960, Morinaga, one of the biggest Japanese confectionery companies, originated the present custom that only women may give chocolates to men. Unlike western countries, gifts such as candies, flowers, or dinner dates are uncommon.”

Gleni presents Valentine’s Day – history and traditions posted at The Gleni Blog saying “Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and many people think that it is just a commercial festival, hyped by the media and shops, just about giving them more business. So we have done some of our usual research to discover the history and traditions of this celebration of Love.”

EastCoastLife @eastcoastlife presents Black and White of Valentine’s Day – the Korean Way posted at East Coast Life saying “Apparently, Valentine’s Day has taken a different twist when it became a part of new Korean culture. According to Yahoo! Korea, Valentine’s Day is a day when “ladies profess their love interest by giving the men chocolate and flowers.”
On the flip side, another day of unknown origin has been set aside for the men to do the same for the ladies. It’s called the White Day which falls exactly a month after Valentine’s Day – 14th of March”
