And yet many international business professionals are faced with this option at some stage in their career.

The thought of living in a different culture raises a number of questions. And it’s natural to turn to others for advice. Here are some tips from twitter on what to do to make your move abroad an easy one.

21 Tips On Living Abroad

Know what your doing. Compare prices of movers. Haggle. Decide: Rent or Buy? Visit your destination prior 2 moving – @HoeferleConsult

Visit the country & talk to people who lived there, discard your expectations you have through books, movies or vacations – learning the language is essential but not enough …don’t underestimate cultural differences! If starting a company get cross-cultural advise. It’s disheartening to see, that so many companies from abroad fail in the US by not getting expert advise in cross cultural matters – Walmart in Germany could have been successful if they would have followed intercultural advisers - @transdomo

Expect the unexpected & to be challenged, be open-minded and flexible, learn the language… and finally…move out of yr comfort zone and the expat community – @culturematters

Study the language first. It will give u invaluable clues about socialization. Talk with people who lived where u go – @tdebaillon

A tip to people moving abroad is learn polite terms & greetings in host country & don’t be afraid to use them. – @DR4Ward

Listen 2 music by country’s most famous composer. Its spirit is part of personality of people u’ll have 2 work with – @XCulture

Really get in to your new culture and embrace it. You begin to value your own a lot more. – @jackyan

Don’t assume that your approach or solution, which may be common practice back home… is the default/preferred method. Culture affects how people look at problems and brainstorm solutions. In short, what may have worked back home may not work elsewhere! Can I add one more comment on the last question? Read, read, read! This will help you acclimatize. It will also help you lessen culture shock. – @CotterHUE

Engage with people before you go, build friends – @wisequeen

A tip for those moving abroad? Familiarize yourself with food, music, art; history can be gr8 icebreaker, equalizer to interact – @DoreenatDMS

Learn as much as you can of the language before you arrive. Helps you feel more comfortable in the first days and go with an open mind – expect things to be different – @pocketcultures

Be open to pushing your boundaries to “walk in their shoes”; e.g.,mostly I am vegetarian, except when I travel – @psitutor

Learn the language, visit the country beforehand & do some business with local people, before deciding to move there. – @culturalrealms

Before you move abroad, study the country and its history, read books, and talk with people living there. – @lyceum

Give yourself at least a month before you start working, and try to make friends pre-arrival, via web/Twitter. – @SeanJamesOliver

Attempt to learn the language & appreciate the way of life of the community you find yourself living. Also, have fun & explore! – @DavidComp

Embrace the experience you have, let go of unrealistic expectations. And get lots of sleep. Living in another country means going off cultural autopilot and that can be tiring! - @CateBrubaker

People moving abroad should take it seriously (even as permanent resident) and consider all parameters, exactly as investors do. – @MATCOM

Visit the place first – @JinanAlrawi

Make sure you check your assumptions! Behaviours may be different, and should be interpreted carefully. – @IENsinMB

Learn as much as you can before the move, but realize that you won’t learn everything about this new culture even after a year of living there. Enjoy the experience and have fun. – @CindyKing

In my Cross-Cultural Twitter Interview series I ask everyone to share a useful tip for people starting to develop an international business. These interviews are with a very diverse group of people with strong cross-cultural skills and who often have first hand experience in business abroad.

Of course there are more tips we can add to this list. Please feel free to share yours below.

21 International Business Tips

Do your market and cross-cultural research! You have to find the cultural code for your product, service or business. You have to be ON CODE in your relationships. – @deborahswallow

Don’t rush into it. Do Ur homework (aka research). Hire some1 who knows what U don’t.- @HoeferleConsult

Jump in the deep end and go do it. Work with an international company, get involved with international activities, learn and learn – @dkiernan

Firstly learn to win in your initial market, understand why you win, understand how internationally direct and thru partners - @dkiernan

travel & work for a longer period of time in different countries, make personal connections, …learning the language & books & research won’t do the trick alone !- @transdomo

“Research” yourself first then research the country/-ies you’re interested in – @culturematters

Travel the world by yourself. Skip the group tours. Walk, bike, take trains. Go out and meet your neighbors. Smile.- @PicSeshu

Be transparent, open, listen. In fact, develop very same qualities which r needed 2 be successful with social media – @tdebaillon

One bit of advice to people in international business is be prepared to make mistakes so don’t forget to have fun – @DR4Ward

Develop cultural proficiency: knowing when to listen, when to ask for help and when to speak – @XCulture

Treat the world as a big domestic market and be sensitive to it. I do not mean be homogeneous, but you can’t be limited by thinking inside your borders. If you want to trade internationally, you cannot perceive there to be a border around your own country. – @jackyan

Without language skills, you can’t hope to fully understand the country, its business, and most everyday aspects. – @CotterHUE

Come to Canada, it’s all here, we’re host to over 200 cultures… plus, we cross markets every day; it’s a fascinating consumer base ..seriously? advice for those interested in international business: do your research/homework – @DoreenatDMS

In another country, trying to speak the language brings many advantages… even if they know yours – @pocketcultures

Learn about the cultures and customs of those you work/do business with. Learning a bit of their lingo shows respect – @psitutor

Read, research & ask: from local business practices, legislation, & policies, to history, traditions and everyday life – @culturalrealms

Know about their culture before you pitch in. A friendly gesture in local lingo can remove all the barriers…I’ve witnessed business deals getting finalized simply because both parties gave due respect to each others’ culture. – @mintblogger

If you are interested in international business, start to read an international magazine, e.g. The Economist. – @lyceum

Learn a new language. It takes years, but depending on translation and interpretation is expensive, and will never capture the whole cultural context of a conversation or relationship. Unless you use @LCWllc ’s translation services, of course. – @SeanJamesOliver

Have confidence in what you bring to the table but be flexible with what others bring to the table – @DavidComp

For people interested in int’l business…combine cross-cultural experience with learning cross-cultural theory… the theory helps illuminate the experience. Both are important. - @CateBrubaker

Here are some tips from the Cross-Cultural Twitter Interview series.

21 Tips To Grow Your Cross-Cultural Skills

Understand that EVERYTHING in life is culturally coded from when we were very young. So we all think differently about things: our meanings for things are deeply buried in our unconscious mind, what is a business for? how we think about our boss; what is luxury; quality; love; etc. Individualism in Far East seen as immaturity- @deborahswallow

Research and appreciate the cultural diversity of the market you are preparing to visit before you travel there – @ohh_la_la

1st, understand your OWN culture -> try to be understanding of others’ backgrounds. Now meet half way for common ground.- @HoeferleConsult

Visit the countries, get to know the people, try and see the world through their eyes. Learn from the experts including @CindyKing- @dkiernan

Immerse yourself deeply into other cultures by living & working in their country for at least six months- @transdomo

One tip to improve your cross-cultural skills…Know thyself–>Listen & Observe–>Communicate… in that order! – @culturematters

Be less self-righteous than who you are dealing with. The more humble you are, the more you are going to gain.- @PicSeshu

Travel, as “bare” as possible. When you are in need of something, you see how people react to your misery. Discovering people when out of your comfort zone is the greatest lesson ever! – @tdebaillon

One tip to improve cross-cultural skills is understand your own values & attitudes 1st so you can compare & contrast – @DR4Ward

Develop ability 2 appreciate historical backgrounds Honor experiences that might contradict ur way of looking @ life – @XCulture

Put yourself in the other culture’s shoes and think about what stereotypes exist about your own culture. – @jackyan

Learn a foreign language. Language and culture are so intertwined that… to fully understand the psyche of another nationality, you must know the language… – @CotterHUE

Learn another language – @wisequeen

Practice patience & never underestimate power of observation & ability to listen; if u make an effort … prepare to be pleasantly surprised; people care about you when you care and are genuinely interested in them – @DoreenatDMS

You can read about how I use the term “international business” here. I’m not saying that it is right and others are wrong. This is simply how I understand the term. It is important to know what your definition is and how this compares to the definition other people are using.

Why are there different definitions? I think there are differences in the definition of “international business” because some people have different understandings of “business”. For some people throwing a bottle in the ocean equates to “international business”. People don’t always seem to appreciate the two way side of business.

This is why I like to ask this question during my Cross-Cultural Twitter Interviews. It’s always interesting to widen your understanding of how others see the world.

Here are some of the definitions of “international business” I received on Twitter with the 140 character limitation.

What Is International Business?

International business ismuch more complex than people realize. Trouble is, people ‘do’ it the way they do it at home! - @deborahswallow

This time in one word only. These are answers from Cross-Cultural Twitter Interviews of the people I recommend you follow on Twitter for cross-cultural and international insights. These Twitter interviews are carried out in the spirit of having fun, so these one word definitions are not to be taken too seriously.

Of course, it’s difficult to come up with a definition of culture that resonates with everyone. And it’s impossible to come up with a one word definition that appeals to everyone. This is part of the fun and depends on what you see in this one word. But I do think this exercise helps us to see “culture” from different perspectives and broadens our understanding of how others perceive culture.

This is why I like combining several one word definitions and coming up with different associations to come up with a variety of different meanings. This helps me to broaden my own understanding of culture.

One of the responses on Twitter was: Culture is Zappos. Of course, this isn’t the best definition, but it certainly got me thinking.

These answers are interesting. I think they are all “correct”.

But why did I ask the question in the first place?

Is The Difference Important?

I often talk to people that have different definitions or conceptions of what an international business is. These differences are so inbred, that I often find myself totally avoiding the words “international business” to avoid miscommunication.

People contact me because they want to develop their international business. The miscommunication problems are usually centered around the word “business”. To me a business has a structure. At the very minimum there is buying and selling carried out within a defined structure and with certain processes.

You cannot say you have an international business until you have a clearly defined structure to carry out your buying and selling.

What Is Global?

With internet, there is an additional monkey wrench. Everyone tends to think they have an international company just because they say they are willing to sell to people abroad. Often this means that the people abroad have to come looking for them too. all to often there is no business, just a bright shiny desire to sell abroad.

This is where two people can think they are speaking about the same thing, when in fact they are not. The problem gets more complicated when people say that global business and international business is the same thing. In a general conversation this can be true, to some extent. But it is not true when you are talking about international business.

My Definition Of International Business

I tend to use two different definitions for the term “international business”, depending on what I am talking about.

General meaning – Any business that has international clients – buyers and sellers located in different countries.

Specific meaning – To differentiate from an export company, an international company takes country-specific marketing and sales actions to sell their products in different countries.

And because of the difficulties I have in communicating with some clients, I try my best to avoid the term “global business”. The term “global business” just opens a can of worms.

Differences In Communication

In reality, I can use whatever definition I want to for “international business”, and I will always have a communication issue to deal with if the other person does not understand my definition.

This also goes for you and your definition of the term “international business”.

Be sure others understand, and continue to understand your definition of international business.

In my experience, it is also wise not to interchange your use the term “global business” and “international business”. In fact I do not even use the term “global business” with anyone I speak to about “international business”. The word “global” can trigger different definitions and change the discussion.

The question of vocabulary may seem like an innocent one. There are dictionaries after all. The truth is that vocabulary does make a big difference in how others understand you. In different countries, words can take on slightly different meanings. Yes, even when you speak in English.
