For the last article in this series on looking at how movies can help you to improve your cross cultural communication, we are going to look at movies that cover the whole story. Successful cross-cultural communication is a little like the story of immigration.
The Immigration Story
When you immigrate you physically move yourself from one country to another.
You leave your home country with a distinct cultural heritage. You may have ideas and preconceptions about what life will be in your new country, but you will only find out what it is really like after the physical move.
For most people the initial contact with the new country is a transition phase. Your initial likes and dislikes change as you get used to your new environment.
It is only after a good length of time that you begin to feel at home in your new country. Some people need more time and effort to adapt than others.
Let’s see how this compares with the process of learning cross-cultural communication skills…
The Cross-Cultural Communication Story
Effective cross-cultural communication starts with putting your own cultural barriers aside. You need to bridge the distance that separates you from the other culture. This means you have to take action. It mental and not physical.
In the initial contact you get to know each other. You are almost always adjustments in communication.
Good cross-cultural communication skills take time to acquire and you acquire them through practice.
Your Learning Process
You need to progress through different stages to develop good cross-cultural skills. It is more a story of personal development than one of travel.
Here are a few movies with a storyline around immigration. Do these movies give you insights into the personal adjustments you need to adapt to life in a new country?
Let me know if you have any other other movies to add to this list.
