It is school vacation for the next two weeks here in the Paris area of France. The schedule in my house is a bit more relaxed and movies nights are planned.
Movies For Cultural Insights
Some movies provide more than entertainment. They can also give you insights into different ways of life and even different cultures. Some movies can be a good starting point for a discussion on cultural differences. They can help you open your own mindset. This is how some movies can help you improve your cross-cultural communication skills.
Movies By Country
Last month my family watched the film Slumdog Millionaire. We really enjoyed the film and appreciated the mixture of American and Indian film styles. This movie won many industry awards.
But it was also the subject of controversy concerning its portrayal of India and Hinduism as well as the welfare of its child actors. This debate can be healthy when it opens awareness in a constructive way.
Here are a few more films that might open debate on different cultures:
- Africa – The Gods Must Be Crazy
- Africa – Out of Africa
- Australia – Australia
- Germany - Schindler’s List
- Greece – Zorba the Greek
- Indonesia – A Year of Living Dangerously
- Israel – Kadosh
- Japan – Shall We Dance
- Netherlands – Rent a Friend
- Vietnam – Indochine
A glimpse of life in different countries is not the only cultural take away you can get from movies. There are other angles we can see too. Over the next two weeks we will be looking at some of these different cultural insights.
Let me know if you have any other other movies to add to this list.
