International Marketing Review – Mothers Day, 2009

International Marketer Review Saturday Blog Carnival
Over the last week I have received several emails reminding me that Mothers Day was this Sunday. But I live in France, and Mothers Day is not for another 2 weeks. This made me look up Mothers Day on Wikipedia. According to Wikipedia, the modern Mother’s Day was created in 1907 by Anna Jarvis as a day for each family to honor their mother and it became nationally recognized in 1914. Mothers Day is celebrated on 31 different dates around the world, some dates are fixed and some change to land on a particular Sunday. There is a Mothers Day in every month except July and September.

Welcome to the 9 May 2009 International Marketing Review. Elena presents Mother’s Day May 3rd posted at la Playa San Juan saying “Just as we published a post about Fathers day so must we write about Mother’s Day, that like every year here in Spain it is celebrated the first Sunday of May (In the States it is the second Sunday) so that means on May 3rd.”

Vadim Nikitin presents Happy (sic?) International Women’s Day! posted at Foreign Policy Blogs saying “while the USSR had long prided itself on its feminist stance and some well-deserved progress in gender equality, Women’s Day often felt more like a mix of Valentines and Mother’s day, an orgy of flowers, cards and chocolates very different from the sort that IWD originator Clara Zetkin, the revolutionary feminist and free love advocate, may have had in mind.”

Megumi Feyen presents Ranking Mother’s Day posted at the official blog of Unique Japan saying “Every year, my husband and I spend quite a bit of time trying to decide what to give our mothers for Mother’s Day. Unfortunately, we usually use our best gift ideas on their birthdays, and our mothers both have particular tastes that we don’t always understand. We don’t live close enough to know what they might immediately desire as a gift, and they have everything they need; literally, everything. The only thing left for us to do is to look for some gift ideas online. So presented here are the top three Mother’s day gift ideas in Japan.”

Alex Webley @AlexWebley presents Give Mom a really wild gift this Mothers Day posted at Alex Webley saying “Mothers Day here in Australia is on Sunday May 10th, as in many other places around the world. This Mother’s Day why not show how much you care by giving her something a little more interesting and memorable than your average gift?”

Wayne Kiltz presents Mother’s Day in Africa posted at Africa Imports African Business Blog saying “In many countries in Africa, Mother’s Day is seen and celebrated the same as it is here in the US. There are some traditions that are unique to Africa though. In South Africa, people wear red or pink carnations for mothers who are living while a white carnation is worn as a symbol of mothers who are dead. In much of Africa, Mother’s Day is taken as an opportunity to thank not just mothers but also grand mothers and women who are like mothers.”

Gina @ginainargentina presents Mother’s Day in Argentina posted at Buenos Aires Style saying “I called my mom on Sunday. “Happy Mother’s Day!” I said.  She laughed and told me that I was a few months too late.  It’s okay – because I didn’t miss the North American Mother’s Day (how could I? I’ve been reminded since birth that even though I was born a few days late, I was due on Mother’s Day in 1976). ”

Jodie Evans presents Do You Know Why Mother’s Day Was Started? posted at Bahamas Blog saying “It is nearly 140 years since Julia Ward Howe wrote her Mother’s Day Proclamation, a pacifist reaction to the carnage of the American Civil War and the Franco–Prussian War. It flowed from her feminist belief that women had a responsibility to shape their societies at the political level.  Every year since CODEPINK began in 2002, we have worked to remind”

Lucky I. Ismail presents Indonesian Mother’s Day – 22nd December posted at Mommy-Baby-Daddy saying “In Indonesia, the main substance of “Hari Ibu” is not about reflection of women’s role in “mommy’s domain”. It is about freedom and democracy! It is about women’s active role in “family domain” in smaller scale, and in building the nation in larger measure. Indonesian celebrate the “Hari Ibu” not only by freeing Mommies from daily tasks or sending gifts, but also by recognizing their function as valuable family / community member and conveying thanks for their works and efforts to our life. During “Hari Ibu”, Indonesian also celebrate the day by assembling seminars and meetings on women’s empowerment and many other issues on women’s development.”

And this post could not be complete without a full list of the different Mothers Day dates. Now if anyone forgets Mothers Day they have a list of other dates to celebrate on.
