International Marketing Review – Earth Day 2009
Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, proposed the first nationwide environmental protest “to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda.”

On April 22, 1970 twenty million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment. Denis Hayes, the national coordinator, and his youthful staff organized massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values.

CNN presents Earth Day 2009: Sowing seeds for a Green Generation in Asia saying “Now in its 39th year, Earth Day 2009 will be marked on April 22 with the launch of the “Green Generation” campaign. It’s an ambitious two-year plan that Earth Day’s organizers hope will motivate people across the world to reverse environmental decline through a renewed focus on grassroots actions.”
Green issues are becoming ever more urgent and real in today’s world. Everybody is looking at each other (governments, companies and brands included) to see what can be done to preserve the planet for the future. British Gas, the UK’s largest energy company, are very aware of their responsibility to help create an energy efficient Britain. And that’s the idea behind Generation Green. Generation Green was launched in May 2008. Its aim is to bring together schools, children, their family and friends to create a greener future.

SnarkRemarks @SnarkRemarks presents Earth Day 2009 Matters. Here’s Why posted at Snark Remarks saying “Earth Day began in 1970 when 20 million people across America peacefully demonstrated to save the environment by ending pollution and the wanton destruction of species and ecosystems. Legislators got the message. Several pieces of landmark legislation to clean up toxic waste, alleviate air pollution, and clean up rivers and streams directly resulted from that Earth Day demonstration. Naturally the big polluters and despoilers immediately started to fight back.”
Joe Simonetta @joesimonetta presents The Meaning of Earth Day: Beyond Short Term Survival posted at sevenwords saying “When I was a graduate student at Harvard University, I was very active in the Harvard Environmental Network (H.E.N.). I suggested, in 1992, that we organize an environmental seminar with a different angle. Instead of addressing multiple and growing environmental problems, we put on a seminar to address why we cause all this damage. We brought in some prominent scholars and hosted a successful event.”
Melissa @MissWall presents Earth Day 2009 posted at mizfitonline saying “In honor of Earth Day tomorrow I wanted to brainstorm a little. Both green & non. Me? I’ll handle the non. I figured Id start a list of ways to save money (some of which are almost green!) in this less than certain economy & you could chime in with your saving-ideas or toss some green thoughts our way instead.”
