Welcome to the 31 January 2009 edition of the International Marketing Review.
Mark Ghuneim @mediaeater presents By the Numbers: Inauguration Day’s Impact on Social Media posted at Mashable saying ” [The innaugration] made history on so many levels to so many people. The ushering in of a new political era, in a peaceful manner has always been a calling card for democracy but never before has it been such a participatory experience. Thanks to the living, breathing web, the inauguration allowed people to share the excitement and historic nature of the experience in real time, whether in Washington or Walla Walla, London or Tokyo.”
Dodano presents Obama’s Social Media Advantage, Act II posted at Startups saying “Much has been said about the masterful use of social media by the Obama campaign. The people working for the President-Elect were by far the more active – and the more savvy – of the two US Presidential candidates in terms of understanding and effectively employing social media as a way of engaging and motivating voters. Regardless of your political leanings, the numbers speak for themselves.”
Lucy Langdon presents 5 Ways Obama Should Change How You Communicate posted at SEOmozBlog saying “After Obama’s inauguration speech last week, a lot of attention was paid to his speechwriter, Jon Favreau. Listening to Obama and reading about how he and Favreau wrote the speech got me thinking about how we use language when writing for the web. I spent some time analysing Obama’s oratory and reading about the subject.”
Kevin Meritt @kmerritt presents How Obama Will Use Web Technology posted at TechCrunch saying “in the first few days at the White House, the Obama Administration will embrace technology in unprecedented ways. Led by forward thinking, web savvy technologists, President Obama’s new media team looks poised and ready to fulfill President Obama’s vision of open-source democracy.”
Steve presents Obama 2.0: Social media KUDOS lessons posted at Ryan MacMillan saying “This incredibly long post is the speaker’s notes for the presentation
“Obama 2.0, Social media KUDOS lessons”, delivered by Leo Ryan from
social media agency Ryan*MacMillan as a part of the Digital Training
Company’s Obama 2.0: Lessons in Social Media from the Obama
Presidential Campaign held at Adam Street Club in London on January
14th.”
James presents 10 Ways Social Media Will Change in 2009 posted at I Think saying “This article discusses how social media
will change in this upcoming year. We are moving back toward human
element with our digital interactions as stated in the article. It is
all about the people. We are moving away from applications, and towards
people. This will create more value. The new device such as the iPhone
has revolutionized social media. It is another device that allows you to stay connected. With social media
continuing to change, we will have to adapt to new technologies and new
breakthroughs. People cannot be satisfied with the old. Jobs are
becoming difficult for ad agencies because of this new social media. These agencies must adapt to stay relevant. ”
Lauren Baker presents Obama White House Adds Google Exec to Head Social Media Project posted at Search Engine Journal saying “Google’s role in the Obama White House has stepped up a notch, with the
hiring of a former Google Executive to head a new social media
initiative. The Obama White House has hired Katie Jacobs Stanton, an
ex-Google Project Manager, as the President’s Director of Citizen
Participation.”
Don presents Bad News for Twitter posted at Promote My Site saying “the news has been hot and heavy that twitter has raised yet another round of venture capital. Which is really impressive considering the current venture capital climate. The new valuation is widely reported as $250M. The Twitter team is to be congratulated, because while they haven’t done much on the revenue side, they sure can raise money! I made the statement several times that Twitter wouldn’t be able to raise more capital.”
John Brandon presents Does Social Media Have Any Real Impact? posted at PCWorld saying “The claim: that social media helped elect our current president. It lasted there long enough to make me think about the topic as an all-purpose term that includes Facebook, Google searches, instant messaging, or anytime a living person interacts with the computer.”
Guru presents Obama Delivers ‘Sweeping Change’ at ‘Warp Speed,’ Now ‘We Will Practice What We Preach’ posted at Latest Technology News – Business News And Expert Advice saying “ABC and CBS on Friday night delivered glowing assessments of President
Barack Obama’s first three days in office, with ABC’s George
Stephanopoulos declaring “this first week was disciplined and strategic” enabling “sweeping change.” Fill-in anchor Diane Sawyer pronounced: “Change the tone and change it at warp speed.”
CBS’s Bob Schieffer relayed how “I think he’s off to a very good start”
and marveled at how — given “the severity of the problems” — any
“human” could “live up to the expectations,” yet Obama “has laid out an
ambitious program” and by closing Guantanamo and deciding to “outlaw torture” he “has told the world that we will practice what we preach.”
