Welcome to the 24 January 2009 edition of the International Marketing Review. The United States has a new President, the Social Media President. John Kennedy was the first Television President and Coolidge the first Radio President. Below are the social media sites that are listed on President Obama’s home page, and below the social media list are posts from the last week that discuss President Obama and his use of social media. AsianAve, BlackPlanet, Digg, Eons, Eventful, Facebook, Faithbase, Flickr, Glee, LinkedIn, MiGente, MyBatanga, MySpace, Twitter, & YouTube. Steve Rubel presents Inside Obama’s Social Media Toolkit posted at Micro Persuasion saying “Edelman’s Digital Public Affairs team in DC has authored an awesome white paper that takes you inside the Obama campaign. You can download it here (PDF). The white paper imparts several lessons: start early, build to scale, innovate where necessary and more.” Rich Brooks presents What Businesses Can Learn from Barack Obama’s Social Media Strategy posted at HERE saying “Barack Obama gets the Internet and social media the way that Kennedy got TV. You’ve heard the story of how radio listeners thought Nixon won the debates but televsion viewers saw it the other way around? Kennedy was built for TV and Obama is built for the Internet age.” Valeria Maltoni presents Obama’s Social Media Campaign posted at Converstion Agent saying “Much has been already written about how Obama crushed the social media and texting worlds during his campaign. Steve Rubel summarized the points made in a recent book about business lessons from the Obama campaign.” Pulggd.in presents Obama’s Guide to Social Media (and How to Crack it) posted at Pluggd.in saying “Barrack Obama’s inauguration is being discussed all over the web, it’s important to look at how Obama weaved social media in his presidential campaign. Here are some interesting facts about Obama’s social media campaign that will act as a benchmark for all you marketers.” Flyte presents Barack Obama and Social Media posted at FlyteBlog saying “His [President Obama's] Web site lists no fewer than 16 social media sites where he has a presence, and he reportedly raised about half a billion dollars in online donations” Laurence Borel presents Obama and Social Media posted at Blog Till you Drop! saying “The Social Media campaign created and managed by GMMB last year on behalf of Barack Obama was truly fascinating – Obama was indeed everywhere online from mainstream sites such as Facebook, Myspace or Twitter to niche communities such as Eons or AsianAve.” Doug Haslam presents Social Media Top 5: Buffering Obama, Lazy Readers, & PR No-Brainers posted at Social Media Today saying “I have been very skeptical of the idea that President Obama’s will be a “social media” administration. Federal government seems to me the last fortress against transparency and interactivity- at least where it comes to adopting new methods- not to mention there are a lot of things a president could not be transparent about in the name of national security.” Ian Paul presents Obama’s Top 5 Tech Tools posted at CIO saying “Barack Obama promises to be the most tech-savvy President ever. We’ve already seen the positive effects the Internet had on his campaign–so what can we expect from the Obama Administration? Here are five online tools that President Obama is likely to use frequently.” VijaySankaran presents 10 Lessons for Marketers from Barack Obama posted at SlideShare saying “Obama beat two established political barnds, Clinton & McCain. He also beat global brands like Nike and Apple to be chosen AdAge Marketer of the year.” Ty presents Did Social Media Marketing Help Get Obama Elected? posted at Red Vw Bus saying “This post is simply stating some facts, and the gross reality that social media is extremely powerful, and no doubt helped Obama into the White House. Why so much emphasis on social media? It works.  Never before have we been able to touch so many people, ‘be friend’ them on social circles, watch live videos, reach so many people so quickly…it’s called ”Word of Mouse” today.” That concludes this edition of The International Marketer Review.
