More synergy with social media Each Saturday, the International Marketing Review now includes links found through my social media profiles, including Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. Beverly Cornell presents Should you have a Globalization Strategy? posted at Global Business Perspectives saying “Everyone is talking about how companies can cope better when national recessions hit because of situations like the recent credit crunch and the subsequent drop in house prices. What are some ways you can recession proof your business by taking your business global?” John Yunker presents Global user experience is much more than a Web site posted at Global by Design saying “I bought a LaCie hard drive recently, and I noticed an interesting gap between the global usability of the LaCie Web site and the installation software that shipped with the drive.” Nathan presents The Globalization of Technology posted at GlobalEDGE saying “A recent report by the OECD indicates that Asia is on average outpacing the west in R&D spending. If you look inside most consumer electronics, even if they are from an American company, you will find that the majority of the internal components were designed or manufactured in Asia. This looks like it is going to become even more likely in the future, with countries like China increasing spending 23% between 2001 and 2006, with the US and Europe only increasing 1-2% over the same period.” OP-Mall presents ECA – World Most Expensive Cities by Cost Of Living posted at Overseas Property Mall saying “London-based human resources consultants, ECA International released their latest Cost of Living report late last year, on first look not much had changed from the year before. However, some of these cities still posed a surprise in terms of expense. Especially Luanda in Angola surprised us, since nobody would think them to be ranked the most expensive city in the world.” The Wall Street Journal presents Global Trade Posts Sharp Decline posted at MEMA saying “Trade among nations is declining sharply around the world, an unusual development even in a recession — and one that makes it more difficult for countries to pull out of their economic dive.” Chris Turner presents Does Eco-Tourism Matter? posted at World Changing saying “In Costa Rica, eco-tourism is, to begin with, a brand. Every other collection of beachfront villas calls itself an “eco-lodge” or “eco-resort” in Costa Rica, and just about every tourist activity drapes itself in imagery of pristine rainforest canopies and rainbow-beaked toucans. Perhaps the strangest use of the prefix was the collection of outsized timeshare villas next to the Marriott resort’s back nine that called itself “Eco-Golf Estates.”” Edward Hugh presents Italy Slips Slowly But Steadily Into Its Worst Recession In Over 30 Years posted at Fist Full of Euros saying “The Italian economy continued to contract sharply in the third quarter of 2008 as exports fell sharply – declining at the fastest rate in three years – under the impact of a global slump which weighed down on foreign demand for Italian products, and pushed the Italian economy into its worst recession since at least 1975. Sales of Italian goods abroad fell 1.6 percent from the previous quarter, their biggest decline since 2005.” Edward Hugh presents Why Spain’s Economic Crisis Is Something More Than A “Housing Slump” posted at Bonobo Land saying “Spain’s inflation (as measured by the EU HICP methodology) was around 1.5% (year on year) in December 2008, according to the flash estimate issued by the stats office (INE) earlier this week. This number only offers us an initial glimpse of the final HICP reading, but, if confirmed, it will mean Spain’s annual rate of inflation has dropped 0.9% (nearly one full percentage point) in the space 0f just one month – since in November the annual rate was 2.4%.” That concludes this edition of The International Marketer Review.
