Cross-Cultural Communication Challenge – Build Trust
The month of September will soon be here and I hope you will join us on our 3rd Cross-Cultural Communication Challenge. This month-long challenge is to learn how to Build Trust.
This is the 3rd month-long challenge on developing one aspect of cross-cultural communication skills. There are links to the first 2 challenges on Mindset and Clarity below. This challenge on Trust will follow the same format as the 2 previous Cross-Cultural Communication Challenges:
- Each day during the month of September there will be one short tip to build trust in cross-cultural communication.
- At the end of the month there will be a Mini-Poster for you to download and review.
- Next month we will review each of these cross-cultural communication tips to build trust once again, but this time we will look specifically at how they apply to international sales.
Trust is a very important part of cross-cultural communication.
Easy To Mistrust Foreigners
One of the reasons why trust is such a big issue is because it is so easy and so fast to lose it in cross-cultural encounters. There is a natural barrier of mistrust for people we do not know and for people who appear different.
Once you lose trust in a cross-cultural situation, other cultural baggage can kick in and make it extremely difficult to gain back. In international business it is always a good practice to proactively cultivate trust. You never know when you will need that capital of trust.
You Need Trust Everywhere
Trust plays an important role in all business and in life in general. Many of the cross-cultural communication tips we will cover in next month’s challenge apply to these situations. The key to great international skills is to use these tips systematically.
Do You Have Any Culture Tips To Share?
- What tips do you have for building trust in cross-cultural communication?

How The Cross-Cultural Communication Challenges Work:
First half of each challenge: 1 month of daily short cross-cultural communication tips
There are 4 Cross-Cultural Communication Challenges in 2009. Cross-cultural communication can be overwhelming. International business professionals are often too busy to take the time to improve their cross-cultural communication skills. This is why this challenge is divided into 4 specific areas of improvement and why the tips are very short.
| Challenge | Why | When |
| Mindset | It all starts here | March 2009 |
| Clarity | Your first priority | June 2009 |
| Trust | To bring in sales | September 2009 |
| Personal Development | For strong cultural skills | December 2009 |
These 4 different aspects of cross-cultural communication are what I found to be the most important to me throughout my 25 years of international sales and marketing.
Use Your Cultural Skills to Get More International Sales
Second half of each challenge: 1 month review on how to use each of these cross-cultural communicaiton tips in international sales.
Are you an international business professional? Then don’t stop at this month’s challenge. After each monthly Cross-Cultural Communication Challenge, the following month reviews each one of these tips once again, this time together the corresponding International Sales Best Practices. And to make it fun and easy to follow quotes are taken from one of Jeffrey Gitomer’s Little Sales Books.
