Thanks for sharing Painted Lady. What I find unsettling is to then think about your own personal baggage. Once you can recognize the baggage in others and see the barriers this creates for effective communication, it's much easier to question your own baggage. And when you realize that the other person does not see the baggage he's bringing to the conversation, it sort of makes you wonder if you can see all of yours. Scary in a way.

Thanks for your comments Niall. Growing up in the Bahamas I know understand how different things are living and working in an environment where everyone knows everyone else. In addition, it often seemed as if everyone was related to everyone else. And it's true this does impact how you do business.

Cindy, an extremely thought provoking post. When communicating internationally, I think that you have got to be more concious to explain the circumstances behind why/what you are saying/doing . You can't assume that the other person understands the landscape or indeed the politics of your local environment. Ireland for instance is a place where everyone knows everyone else, it's a very local biz environment that comes with its associated good and bad points :)
.-= Niall Devitt´s last blog ..What is the shortest word in the English language that contains the letters: abcdef? =-.

Very good read. We had the pleasure Thanksgiving and Christmas to exposure to my granddaughter's college room mate who is from China. She was such a delight in that she wanted to learn and experience our holidays. We, of course, asked her many questions about her homeland, family, and culture.

This experience was much different from the one a few years ago with the foreign exchange student that lived with my daughter's family. She definitely had a lot of 'baggage.' She wanted everything like it was in her home country and was not interested at all in our customs or traditions. Made us all wonder why she even bothered to come to this country.

Thanks for sharing this important message to value and learn from others. Our creator made us all different.

In gratitude,
Annette
