One of the very first difficulties in cross-cultural communication is getting used to different names. Sometimes it can take you several months to even hear the different sounds in different names.
People who answer the phone to a wide variety of international callers need excellent skills to recognize different cultural names.
Here is a fun little tool:
Use this to find out where different names are used throughout the world. Simply type in the surname to find the frequency this name appears in different countries.
I personally noted a lack of info from the eastern European and the Commonwealth of Independent States (former Soviet Union). But this website remains both entertaining and educational.
…with regards to learning how to recognize and hear different cultural names, give yourself lots of time to practice. And arm yourself with patience and politeness.
