Culture Tips & International Links

@cindyking
Here is my weekly review of social media marketing activities and a list of last weeks tweets with useful links, tips and resources… and some fun videos too.

Social Media Platforms

When I first started social media, I  blogged.  Once I felt comfortable with blogging I started microblogging on Twitter.  Of course, I have a Facebook and LinkedIn profile as well as several profiles on other social media platforms.  But I concentrated on learning how to connect with people on one platform at a time.  And I have created content creation processes for both my blogs and Twitter.

New Social Media Content Flow

I remember some time at the beginning of the year I tried to find out what strategies businesses were using for the flow between social media platforms… and no one I spoke to understood the reason behind my question.

Today I have my own anwsers to this question of where I should input content and how to set up the automatic feeds  most social media platforms propose to then place content on other social media platforms.  I am a solo-professional and need to re-purpose and adapt the same content for different social media platforms.

Getting More Value From My Content

And I realize that what I am doing right now is wrong.  Well, I am not getting as much value out of the content I produce as I can.

You see I have finally figured out how I am going to use my Facebook Fan Pages.  That’s right, in addition to my Facebook Profile, I have 2 Fan Pages.

Up until now I have been placing too much unique content on Twitter and these tweets simply get lost in the massive flow of Twitter.  Of course, this is one of the reasons why I write these weekly Tweet posts: to keep the information here and then “file” it away on my Resource pages.

But I am putting on the final touches to a new plan for publishing some content on Facebook first, and then feeding onto Twitter.  This means that I will stop my Tweeter feed from being published on Facebook. And I will now publish some content on both platforms.  That’s what I have been working on.  More next week.

Last Week’s Cross-Cultural Twitter Interviews:

I had interviews with 2 people I admire, who both gave some great answers to the 10 Cross-Cultural and International Twitter Interview Questions. They are both worth reading.

Click here for previous Cross-Cultural Twitter Interviews.  This week there are no Twitter Interviews planned.  But they resume again the following week.

HI Cindy,

I’m curious how you fit LinkedIn to your overall strategy in using these platforms? You don’t mention it here. I’m more involved with B2B markets and have been putting energy into getting LI and Twitter going first before I got into Facebook fan pages. What do you think about the difference between LI and FB for B2B markets.
Thanks,
Linda

Hi Linda,

You’re right. The time I spend on social media goes first to my blog and social bookmarking & networking. Then Twitter a close second. I am beefing up FaceBook Fan Page mainly because it is content that gets indexed by Google. The networking on LinkedIn on cultural topics is not really a great fit for me. Even if I write about the soft skills needed in international business, I am very sales and business development focused when it comes to “culture”. LinkedIn is also very “North American” where soft skills do not get a lot of attention – this is probably also why I get more value for my time elsewhere.

When I first looked into LinkedIn it was a waste of my time. I got more direct contacts out of the time I spent on my blog… yes even from the same companies on LinkedIn. BUT, having said that I do one on one networking there – I prefer direct contacts most of the time. I just use it differently. It is more “corporate”, less social in my interest groups – even the Q&A’s and group discussions. It really does remind me of my local Chamber of Commerce meetings.

With regards to the value of B2B on other platforms outside of LinkedIn… of course there is. People are people. It depends where they want to hook up with. It takes a bit more “work” creating the B2B relationships on your blog, FB or on social bookmarking platforms, but I find the relationships much better in the long run. I have to say that because I target B2B, the connections I make almost always email me or call me directly. Some of them will engage on Twitter. But they are not people who want to talk about their problems in the blog comment sections.

You might have a different experience if you are targeting the copywriting market directly.
