Cross-cultural communication is mined with possible cultural barriers and misunderstandings. People with strong cultural skills learn to verify the common understanding regularly throughout the conversation.  With experience you learn various techniques to make this a natural part of the conversation.  Another key component is to listen actively to the conversation.
