This is the last of the 5 tips on how to simplify your communication to get extreme with clarity in cross-cultural encounters.

One of the more advanced cross-cultural communication skills in business is knowing when you need to say something in person and when it should be done in writing. This is something you learn with experience. There are too many variables:

  • The cultures involved
  • The different business environments
  • The nature of your business

Clarity In Cross-Cultural Communication Tip 20

But there is one place you can start:

Keep your written communication simple and to the point

Most business people are aware of the need for clarity in emails. For cross-cultural communications remember to be as thorough as you possibly can in editing your written communication. Format your written communication to make your point even more easy to read and understand. Remember, non-native English speakers appreciate clear communication that is easy to read.

What To Do When Your Message Is Not Simple

A good rule to follow is to use verbal communication, at least by phone if not in person, when you need to communicate something that you cannot write in simple terms. What happens is this…

When you find that you cannot write your message in a very simple format, and you speak to the person from the different culture, you often discover their areas of concern. Through dialogue you will often find that your message become clearer.

Use this tip as a starting point. Think about what this means to you. Not sure what you think about this? There are a few links below for suggested reading to get you started. Follow each of these tips this month to improve your cultural skills.
