International Marketing Review – Easter 2009

Easter Sunday falls on April 12, 2009 here is a list on how Easter is celebrated around the world. According to Christian scripture, Jesus was resurrected from the dead three days after his crucifixion. Christians celebrate this resurrection on Easter Day or Easter Sunday, two days after Good Friday.

The date is not fixed, and always lands on the first Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon, which is the first moon whose 14th day is on or after March 21 (clear, isn’t it?). Ronald W. Mallen has explained the mathematical process to calculate exactly when Easter is celebrated.

Larry Ferlazzo @LarryFerlazzo presents The Best Sites For Learning About Easter And Passover posted at Larry Ferlazzo’s Websites of the Day… saying “Both the Christian Easter and the Jewish Passover take place next month.  Here’s a “The Best…” list sharing my picks for the best online resources out there about these holidays that are accessible to English Language Learners”

Robert Curley @gocaribbean presents Easter in the Caribbean Caribbean Island Easter Traditions, Celebrations, Food and More posted at About.com saying “Christianity — and especially Catholicism — is the dominant religion throughout the Caribbean, and many island residents are quite devout. So, despite the revelry associated with the pre-Lentin Carnival, Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday tend to be solemn occasions in the Caribbean. With its emphasis on family, however, spending Easter in the islands also can be a warm and welcoming experience for visitors and, as with most things in the Caribbean, local traditions put a unique tropical spin on the holiday’s religious and secular celebrations.”

Barack Obama presents 2009 White House Easter Egg Roll posted at The Whitehouse saying “President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are pleased to announce the 2009 White House Easter Egg Roll. The White House Easter Egg Roll will be held on Monday, April 13, 2009 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the South Lawn of the White House. Talented performers, special guests and thousands of visitors from all over the country are expected to attend this year. For the first time, tickets for the Easter Egg Roll will be distributed online so that more children and families from across the United States have the opportunity to experience this event. ”

Marcus Cederstrom presents Easter Sunday in Alcalá de Henares, Spain posted at Europe a la Carte saying “My experience of Easter has always focused on candy, Easter egg hunts, and ham. Lots and lots of ham. So spending Easter Sunday in Alcalá de Henares was a far cry from what I had grown accustomed to. Catholic processions are held throughout Spain during the Holy Week, many starting on Palm Sunday. Just about 35 km northeast of Madrid, the Holy Week processions through the streets of Alcalá de Henares are fascinating. Hundreds of people, dressed in traditional Catholic garb march through the city. Some are dressed in the classic penitential robes and walk barefoot. Others take penitence to another level and walk through town in shackles.”

Greek City presents Easter in Greece – celebrations and rituals of the Peloponnese and Sterea Ellada posted at Greek City saying “Easter in Greece is celebrated in every corner of the country with an aroma of spring, symbolizing the Resurrection I and revival with the awakening of nature. Each year, the piety of the faithful and the greatness of the Holy Drama meet with greek tradition through customs and local traditional celebrations, that were inspired and kept by whole generations through the centuries. So, in whichever area one finds oneself, he will experience this religious holiday with splendor and devoutness, but in a different way: the ritual of the Holy Week, the observance of traditions and customs, the festivities that differ from place to place. ”

Africa Imports @africaimports presents Celebrating Easter in Africa posted at Africa Imports saying “In Africa, Easter is a social celebration as well as a spiritual one. At Easter families come together. They share special food with Christians and non-Christians, indulging in boiled or roasted rice with meat or chicken. Meat and chicken are very expensive for many countries in Africa, so this is quite a luxurious meal.”

Auron presents The Pagan Origins of the Christian Easter Tradition posted at Bukisa saying “Easter time is for Christians one of the most Holy periods of the year, representing the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. But there are those that believe the traditions celebrated have a history that pre-dates the period of Jesus, coming instead from earlier Pagan rituals.”
