International Marketing Review – G20

At the 2009 G20 summit, world leaders pledged $1.1 trillion in loans and guarantees to struggling countries and agreed to crack down on tax havens and hedge funds, but failed to reach an agreement on more stimulus spending to attack the global economic decline. Below are some of the posts about G20 that I found interesting. Some more serious than others. Enjoy.

Welcome to the 4 April 2009 International Marketing Review.

This week we will begin with a Map of the crisis : Unemployment rate in G20 countries since 2007 from @ispirit saying “We decided to mark this event with a map of the current crisis representing the rise in unemployment in G20 countries since July of 2007 (crisis start date) until firt quarter of 2009. You can see the basic tendency and the rise for each quarter and for each country. The global map allows you to quickly see massive scope of the current world’s crisis.”

Matthew Tostevin presents G20. How did Africa do? posted at Africa Blog saying “In concrete terms:
• Resources available to the IMF will be trebled to $750 billion.
•  There will be support for a new allocation of Special Drawing Rights of $250 billion – something that could help poor countries
• There will be support for $100 billion more lending by Multilateral Development Banks (those include the World Bank Group and the African Development Bank)
• There will be $250 billion support for trade finance.
• Use will be made of resources from IMF gold sales “for concessional finance for the poorest countries”.
• Global financial institutions will be strengthened and reformed, ensuring that emerging and developing economies, including the poorest, must have greater voice and representation.”

Dollars & Sense presents WE20–The People’s G20 posted at Dollars & Sense saying “we20, the people’s answer to the G20 group of nations, today announces the launch of its website at we20.org, enabling individual people and groups anywhere in the world to host their own G20 summits and formulate plans for economic recovery. In the run-up to the London G20 summit”

Jessica Gomez Duran presents Pre-G20 Africa Outreach posted at One saying “Gordon Brown hosted a meeting last week, known as `Pre-G20 London Summit Africa Outreach Consultative Meeting’, with a group of African leaders ahead of the G20 Summit on 2 April. Representatives of several states including Ethiopia, Liberia and South Africa, participated in the meeting which was an opportunity for Gordon Brown to hear about these countries’ economic needs and the needs of the poorer countries more generally.”

Laura Kenney presents The G20 Wives – Who’s The Most Stylish First Lady? posted at StlyeList saying “At the G20 summit in London, the headline news is being made at the summit talks, but the style news was made last night at London’s Royal Opera House, where the first lades gathered to enjoy The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet. “

TearFund presents G20: Progress on the economy, some hope for the poor but failure on climate posted at TearFund.org saying “The G20 today made some significant progress on funding for stimulus packages, tackling tax havens and shadow banking. However the reported 1.1 trillion dollar programme of investment pledged to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) needs to be looked at closely, according to the development NGO Tearfund.”

Kim Chipman presents Obama Says G-20 Summit a ‘Turning Point’ in Economic Recovery posted at Bloomberg saying “President Barack Obama called his first international summit a success and “turning point” in the push to stamp out a recession and create a new, robust worldwide economy.  “Ultimately, the only way out of a recession that is global in scope is with a response that is global in coordination,” Obama said today in his weekly address on the radio and Internet.”
